Helping your Child to Read


Being a successful reader isn't just about being able to read accurately and fluently. It is about understanding what has been read and thinking more deeply about the text.

Many believe that reading the single most important thing you can do to help your child's education. It's best to read little and often, so try to put aside some time for it every day.

Think of ways to make reading fun - you want your child to learn how pleasurable books can be. If you're both enjoying talking about the content of a particular page, linger over it for as long as you like.

Where did ... go?
Describe ...
What paragraph tells you ...?
Where are ...?
Why do ...?

Why is it easier to read ...?

Why does the author use ... ?

Explain why ... is used. 
Why does the writer compare ... to ... ?
What does ... tell you about ... ?
Why did the author use ... ?
How does ... help you understand?

How has the choice of words created a feeling of ... ?

How were the purposes of the texts different?
